SURF CLUB: 25 FEB
Clean, offshore two foot peaks greeted us at Belongil on Saturday morning, with the conditions lining up nicely for the second surf club of the 2023 season. There was a great turnout this month, with some old members we hadn't seen since before the covid lockdowns, and some new faces showing up for the first time ever.
As always, this Saturday the surfing was mind blowing, and the waves were on, which made for plenty of really high scores from everyone and most heats finishing with only a point or two between 1st and 6th place. We were also stoked to see new surf club member Holly make it through to the finals surfing a Twinny in her first comp.
Both the Mens and Womens finals required a great deal of deliberation to finalise the placings, the scores were tightly stacked and each judge had different surfers in different places. Final places from second to sixth in the womens division were virtually impossible to pick since the points were so close, but Gabi Streader was the clear stand out on the day winning each of her heats and taking out the finals. The mens division was also tight, with 1.5 points separating first and sixth place. After some careful count backs the winner was confirmed. Although Kai got the highest scoring wave of the event in the finals, Myles Doughman had 3 bangers that pushed him through to the lead.
The BBQ was once again held back at Postcard and we feasted on a meal that Ambrose McNeill, (a man who has probably eaten more comp meals than anyone) claimed was the best food he has ever eaten at a competition, Porchetta provided courtesy of surf club regular (and last months womens division winner) Roisin Carolan! Thanks again to Gage Roads Brew Co for hooking us up with the tasty tins.
